6 tips to visually increase the space of a room

- Blog, Tips, Home

In a previous article, you were given several tips for optimising your small spaces by rearranging them so that they are more functional. But what about the tricks that can be used to visually increase the space in a room?

1. Choosing the right wall colour

With the right choice of colours for the walls, it is possible not only to make an apartment or a living space brighter but also to give the impression that it is larger than it actually is. Light colours are known to bring an illusion of space. Choose pastels and cool colours such as off-white, cream or light blue for your interiors. These trendy colours will create a Scandinavian feel in your living room, your bedroom or your kitchen, as well as adding extra brightness. But be careful not to have the walls and furnishings in just one colour! If the walls are painted white, choose furniture with a touch of colour like a grey sofa for example. In this way, you will play up the contrasts and bring balance to your living space.

2. Use trompe l'oeil wallpaper

To create a feeling of space, don't be afraid to play with wallpaper. It can be an excellent way to trick the eye in a room provided you choose the pattern well. You may well be surprised at the space you will have "gained" through this technique!

3. Playing with mirrors to give an illusion of a larger space

Mirrors reflect the natural light making the room appear lighter. To make the most of them, place them facing the windows. You can play with the mirrors by placing them vertically, enlarging the room, or sideways, lengthening the room. The use of mirrors in the kitchen instead of a pattern or tiles on the walls creates an impression of a larger space.

4. Select the right lighting

When it comes to illuminating a room, we often think of lighting fitted in the ceiling. However, it is best to leave the ceiling light alone and concentrate on indirect lighting. Play with indirect lighting by using several small light sources in the form of lamps or wall lights. Place small lamps on your furniture to create a cosy, warm atmosphere.

5. Use contrasts

The use of contrasts re-establishes the volume of the room. The use of vertical stripes will make it possible to push back the ceiling to give an impression of space in height. If you want to lengthen your room, opt for horizontal stripes.

Another way to play with contrasts to enhance the illusion of space is to choose a dark colour at ground level while keeping the ceiling pale.

If the room seems too rectangular, opt for a light colour on the longer walls and a dark colour on the smaller ones.

6. Create depth

If the space lacks depth, play with the colours to create this depth illusion. Painting the ceiling and floor with a dark colour, while keeping the walls light is a way to give depth to a room that is too narrow. Using floor tiles is another technique for creating depth. The pattern on the floor will give the illusion of a longer floor and thus create depth in the room. Take care, however, in your choice of the pattern for your tiling! Keep in mind that small tiles shrink space, while larger tiles increase it.
